Nigredo, or Blackness

Death, skeletons, tombs and black ravens are all symbols for the Blackness at the beginning of the Great Work.

The rising and descending birds indicate the process of volatizing the fixed and fixing the volatile, or distillation and condensation, which is an ongoing process during the period of Blackness.

In other words, one needs to shift ones attention to the more subtle aspects of oneself, like during meditation, and then come back to the bodily awareness, many, many times, in order to refine and purify oneself.
