back to Rebis
The Rebis here has a clear male and female body. Its name is inscribed on its chest. The arms read Solve and Coagula, dissolve and coagulate. It is a famous alchemical phrase that indicates a constant and repeating process of solving the Matter into the volatile, and then coagulating the volatile into the fixed state of matter again. It is a way of saying that one must continually refine his consciousness by meditation, but of course also in his daily life.
The Rebis has two heads: the Moon and the Sun, symbols of the second stage of the Work, Albedo and the third stage, Rubedo. The first stage Nigredo or blackness is symbolized here by the dark sphere underneath the Rebis bearing the inscription of Chaos.
